Compass Care Initiative
Helping families heal, one at a time
Thanks to generous community support, there are now 12 chaplains throughout Virginia Mason Memorial. All 12 chaplains are cross-trained, and several are bilingual. Whether a patient receives palliative or hospice care at Cottage in the Meadow or at the hospital, or receiving treatment at North Star Lodge Cancer Care Center, they are being met by chaplains who connect with patients where they are and spiritually walk them to where they want to go, addressing issues of fear, faith and the future. Offering 24-hour care in the hospital setting, chaplains assist patients, families and staff with issues of trauma, grief and spiritual pain. Our Spiritual Care Program is looked at around the country as the example to follow.
Bereavement services are also supported by your charitable contributions. Your generosity has provided the funds for support groups throughout the Valley, as well as innovative programming for those who have suffered a loss, including grief recovery workshops, kids’ grief workshops, and cooking-for-one classes. Your gifts have trained area counselors and our own staff in kids’ grief by bringing in Dr. Donna Schuurman from the Dougy Center every year for the past three years; providing vital support in all areas of our Valley.
